How Can Probiotics Support Breath Health
Everyone is subject to unpleasant odors stemming from the oral cavity from time to time, especially after eating strongly odorous food like garlic or onions. In 85% of cases, the root cause of bad breath is due to the emission of malodorous gases from the mouth called volatile sulfur compounds. Lifestyle habits like smoking, drinking alcohol or dietary habits can also lead to halitosis, which affects 6% to 50% of the human population worldwide. Food debris in-between teeth or dental plaque, feed oral microorganisms, resulting in the production of these malodourous gases.
Probiotics, a Great Addition to Daily Habits for Oral Health
In addition to regular oral hygiene, probiotics appear as a complementary solution for the maintenance of oral health. Probiotics are well documented for their beneficial effects in supporting a healthy oral microbiota. They are being considered and studied beyond gut health, and their modes of actions are now well identified.
Oralis Probiotic Combination
Based on previous results supporting oral health, three probiotic bacterial strains, namely L. helveticus Rosell®-52, L. rhamnosus Rosell®-11 and B. longum Rosell®-175 composing the formula called Oralis, were studied, for the maintenance of a healthy breath.
Specifically, there are two in vitro studies which demonstrate the competition activity of the Oralis combination. The growth of various bacteria associated with the production of volatile sulfur compounds (Atopobium parvulum, Eubacterium sulci, Solobacterium moorei, Parvimonas micra, Treponema denticola, and Porphyromonas gingivalis) was measured to study the impact of the Oralis combination on the oral microbiome. Results of these two in vitro studies demonstrate that Oralis was able to significantly support maintaining beneficial bacteria for a healthy oral microbiome.
By competing against other microorganisms associated with the production of volatile sulfur compounds, probiotics can help contribute to the maintenance of oral health, including healthy breath.
Lozenges: An Innovative Galenic Form
To leverage these findings, Lallemand Health Solutions galenic research and development team has developed a new specific dosage form: lozenges. With their slow melting properties and long residence time in the mouth, lozenges are the perfect dosage form for an oral health application before ingesting.
